Our Specialist Cockroach Treatments
Large cockroaches are one of the pests covered in our general pest treatment. Our thorough perimeter spray prevents cockroaches entering the house and our dust treatments to roof voids and sub-floors (if you have one) will target common hiding places. On occasions we may use baits in kitchen areas as a preventative option.
Small cockroach species such as the German cockroach and brown-banded cockroach only live indoors and require a specialist treatment (and are therefore not included on our general pest treatment).
German cockroach treatment
Comprehensive inspections are essential to successful German cockroach treatments – it is imperative to find all the cockroach hiding places. We use a range of specialist sprays and dusts to treat harbourage and use cockroach baits for other areas. German cockroaches are a challenging pest to control and it’s important to ensure we have eliminated all the cockroaches, otherwise the infestation can rebound within a couple of months. We generally allow for a follow up 4-6 weeks after the initial treatment to confirm eradication and carry out a top up treatment as required. Although we guarantee elimination of your German cockroach problem, we do not provide any ongoing warranties, as new infestations can be introduced any time (by accident) by bringing in boxes containing cockroaches or cockroach egg cases.
Our brown-banded cockroach treatment is very similar to the German cockroach treatment although we often have to inspect and treat other rooms in the house (bedrooms and living areas).

Cockroach Control FAQ
To exterminate cockroaches requires a range of products. Sprays can form a key component of a treatment, but to treat areas where their hiding places cannot be located requires the use of baits. To treat in and around electrical areas, dusts may be required. Around food preparation areas, product choice is restricted and so a combination of baits and sticky traps may be required. One reason DIY treatments fail is that homeowners don’t have access to the full range of products required to deliver complete control.
However, to help exterminate cockroach infestations and more importantly to help prevent future cockroach infestations, it is necessary to eliminate the root cause of the infestation – how did the cockroaches enter the property and what food sources are they feeding on? This is where pest control knowledge and experience are important, which is why we view ourselves as pest control managers rather than just cockroach exterminators.
Professional pest control can be very effective in getting rid of cockroaches. As professional pest controllers, we can access a range of specialist cockroach products (which are not available in supermarkets or hardware stores) to eliminate a cockroach infestation. Cockroach baits are the smart way to eliminate cockroaches, especially when their hiding places cannot be located. Cockroach bait is placed where the cockroaches are seen foraging (which will be near the nest). Cockroach baits contain a food attractive to cockroaches and a slow acting insecticide. The cockroaches eat the bait, but it can take up to 24 hours to kill the cockroach. During that time the cockroach has returned to the harbourage where is starts to feel ill. Its vomit and faeces contain small amounts of insecticide. Here’s the gross part – other cockroaches in the nest, especially the young cockroaches, eat the vomit and faeces! In doing so, they also ingest the insecticide and die. In this way, baits can control the whole population. Depending on the size of the population, it can take 1-2 week to eliminate all the cockroaches.
It’s always good to have a cockroach spray in the cupboard – they are very useful for the occasional invader, but a professional cockroach treatment is designed to deliver long lasting protection. If cockroaches are hit with the wet spray, the insecticide is absorbed quickly through their cuticle and kills the insects. But the long lasting protection is provided by the layer of insecticide that is left on the surface once the spray has dried. These microscopic particles of insecticide get picked up by cockroaches walking over the surface.
Types of Cockroaches in Brisbane
There are many different cockroach species, but only a few species are considered pests. The pest cockroaches can be split into large cockroach species and small cockroach species. The large cockroach species (such as the Australian and American cockroaches) tend to live outside and come inside when looking for food, whereas the small cockroach species (German cockroach and brown-banded cockroach) only live indoors.
The Australian cockroach is a large reddish brown cockroach up to 35 mm long, with a pale line around the pronotum (the shield behind the head) and along the top edge of the wing. They typically live outside in leaf litter, in sewers, drains and garbage, but also like roof voids and sub-floors. They will fly in warmer weather.
The American cockroach looks very similar to the Australian cockroach, but is a little bigger (up to 40 mm) and lacks the pale markings on the edge of the forewing. Like the Australian cockroach, they typically live outside in leaf litter, in sewers, drains and garbage, but also like roof voids and sub-floors, and will also fly in warmer weather.
The German cockroach is a small brown cockroach up to 15 mm long, with 2 dark vertical lines along the pronotum (the shield behind the head). The nymphs (baby cockroaches) can be as small as 2-3 mm. German cockroaches don’t fly (although the adults do have wings). They only live indoors and congregate together in harbourages. Due to their small size, a large number of cockroaches can fit into a very small space. Apart from cracks and crevices, they will hide in cupboard hinges, dishwasher hinges and control panels, plug sockets, toasters and other electrical equipment.
The brown-banded cockroach is a similar size to the German cockroach (up to 15 mm), but has 2 light coloured bands that run across the width of the body and very long antennae. They can fly, but only short distances in warmer weather. Like German cockroaches, they will also reside in kitchen areas but tend to also set up home in other rooms in the house such as living rooms and bedrooms. They will quite commonly hide in electrical equipment.
Cockroach Prevention
Prevent cockroach entry
Large cockroaches can be prevented from coming inside by having well fitted insect screens on windows and doors, along with draft excluders. Any other cracks and crevices in exterior walls should be filled along with any gaps in floorboards that may allow access from the sub-floor (if you have one). The best way to prevent accidentally introducing German cockroaches to your home, is to check incoming boxes for cockroaches and their egg cases.
Eliminate sources of food and moisture
- Cockroaches need moisture – Fix any leaking taps or pipework
- Make sure the cooker, grill and fridge are kept clean (especially underneath and the hard to reach places)
- Don’t leave pet food bowls out (especially with food in)
- Clear up spilled food
- Don’t leave unwashed dishes on the side after meals
- Make sure food is stored in plastic or glass containers, with tight fitting lids
- Rubbish should be put in sealed bags before placing in the bin
Reduce cockroach hiding places
- Avoid storing goods in the sub-floor or roof void. If you must store goods in these areas, use plastic boxes with well fitted lids, rather than cardboard boxes
- Keep the perimeter of the building free from stored goods
- Trim back vegetation from any garden beds next to the house, avoid using wood chips or straw as mulch and avoid watering garden beds
