How our funnel ant treatments work…
We treat your lawn and in particular the nests (mud funnels) with a specialist funnel ant product, which is not available in supermarkets or hardware stores. Foraging and tunnelling ants come into contact with the treated soil and die a few hours later. Over the next couple of days more and more ants come into contact with the treated soil and die. Additionally, as the insecticide is relatively slow acting, ants often return to the nest before dying and through body to body contact, spread the insecticide to ants within the nest. In less than a week, the nest is dead.
We offer a 3 month free service period for our funnel ant treatments, but the treatment can last a lot longer.
Our treatments eliminate the nests in your lawn, so the only way the infestation can return is from nests moving in from surrounding areas. How quickly nests move in depends on the nest density in surrounding properties – the more nests there are, the quicker they are likely to move in.
However, the insecticide remains in the areas of lawn that have been treated for many months, so ants are unlikely to move into those areas. So the bigger your original infestation, the larger the area of lawn treated and so the larger area of your lawn that is protected from future invasion, which means the treatment will likely last longer.
We guarantee the elimination of nests in your lawn and provide a 3 month service-free period for funnel ants in lawns. This means that if the ants return at any time during the 3 months after treatment, we will come back a do a spot treatment for free! However, as mentioned above many customers have noticed the treatments last longer than 3 months.
The cost of the funnel ant treatment depends on the area of the lawn to be treated and the number of nests present. Please phone for a free quote. An approximate size of the lawn and a photo of the nest density will help us provide an accurate quote.
We need to see the visible funnels to allow us to treat all the nests, so please don’t mow the lawn and knockdown the funnels before we arrive. That said, ideally the grass should be relatively short. In an ideal world, the lawn would have been moved a week or so before arrival and there would have been a nice bit of rain for the ants to build new funnels!
Children and pets needs to be kept out of the treatment area during application and until the treatment has dried.
After applying the product, we need to water the product into the soil. Pets and children need to be kept out of the treatment area until the soil is dry.

Funnel Ant FAQ
Funnel ants are a medium sized, pale brown ant that builds nests underground. They deposit the excavated soil above ground creating their characteristic mud funnels. In major infestations the nest density in lawns is significant. Very little is known about funnel ants but it is assumed that there can be multiple interconnected nests as part of the same colony.
The mud funnels are the result of their underground excavations to create nest chambers and tunnels. Typically their peak periods of excavation occur after rain, as the soil is easier to excavate and there will often have some collapsed tunnels to deal with, which require re-excavation.
Funnel ants do have a mild sting but they rarely come into human contact as they live underground.
Funnel ants have a strange diet! They feed off the honeydew produced by aphids that feed on the roots of certain grasses. This is why they live underground and which is why they are not present in every lawn – if the grass in the lawn does not support aphids, the ants won’t be there either!
The ants will also eat insects and other invertebrates that fall into their funnels.
There is no DIY option to get rid of funnel ants. Funnel ants require specialist products which aren’t available in supermarkets or hardware stores. There are some general insecticides for ants in lawns, but they generally only kill some of the ants and do not eliminate the nest, so the problem returns.
