To get rid of silverfish completely a professional silverfish treatment is often the best option as we carry out a thorough inspection to find all their hiding places before carrying out a treatment.
If you want to protect your clothes and documents from annoying silverfish, please give us a call!
Our Specialist Silverfish Treatments
Silverfish are one of the pests covered in our general pest treatment. Our comprehensive spray and dust treatment to roof voids (and sub-floors, if you have one) will provide long lasting protection from silverfish – we provide a 6-month service free period.
However, if you have an active severe infestation we may need to carry out a specialist silverfish treatment. This will involve a thorough inspection and treatment to the areas of concern. We will need your assistance to complete the treatment as all the clothes in the wardrobes and drawers of concern will need to be emptied, inspected and then washed in hot water. We can then treat the drawers and wardrobes. In areas where silverfish have been spotted in stored documents, the documents and books will need to be inspected individually (and any silverfish squashed and sprayed) before re-storing the documents in plastic boxes with lids.
After a treatment it is then necessary to carry out the key preventative steps to make your home less attractive to silverfish. The key action is to reduce the humidity in the house / rooms of concern.

Silverfish Pest Control FAQ
Silverfish are a primitive type of insect – they have 6 legs, but they don’t have any wings. They are up to 2 cm long and covered in silver / brown scales, with long antennae on their head and 3 long filaments at the end of their abdomen. The baby silverfish look exactly like their parents (just smaller). To grow they need to moult (shed their skin). They can moult up to 50 times during their life, but will be able to reproduce after 9 moults.
Silverfish prefer carbohydrates, in particular starch. That means they like paper, glue used to make books, clothing made with natural fibres (especially cotton, linen and silk), foods with a high starch content, especially cereals. They will also feed on mould that grows on these starchy materials.
Silverfish are not harmful to humans – they do not bite or sting, and they are not poisonous. However, they can cause damage to paper and clothing (which can be expensive and harmful to the bank account!).
Yes, if you spot silverfish it could be a sign of mould. Silverfish and mould both require high humidity to survive, so if you spot silverfish the conditions would most likely to be suitable for mould too. Although silverfish target carbohydrates as the main part of their diet, they will feed on mould as well.
There’s no such thing as a “bookworm” – but the word can apply to any pest that may eat and damage books, and a silverfish can certainly do that! Silverfish are particularly fond of starch, which is found in paper and the glue that holds books together.
