Professional Spider Pest Control Services
to Get Rid of Scary Spiders

Professional Spider Exterminator Services

MAD ANT Termite and Pest Control provides specialist spider control services from North Brisbane to Caboolture.

A few spiders in the yard can be beneficial to help keep insect numbers down, but no-one likes them in the house. Some spiders can deliver a dangerous bite and are a certainly a significant safety concern, especially to children and pets. Of course for some, spiders are downright scary! Even for those who are quite tolerant of spiders, no-one likes messy webs on the outside of their house.

We include spider pest control treatments as part of our general pest treatment, so if you need to get lasting protection from spiders and their webs, please give us a call!

SERVICE FREE PERIOD: We offer a 6-month service-free period for spiders inside the home and 3 months outside the home, as part of our general pest treatment.

Our Specialist Spider Treatments

As spiders are one of the most common pest problems around the home, our general pest treatments incorporate a specialist spider treatment. Our external spray treatments target spider hiding places. It kills any spiders hit directly with the spray and leaves a long lasting residue on surfaces, which prevents spiders from entering the house and building their webs on the outside of the building.

The areas we treat:

  • Under eaves
  • Around windows and doors
  • In weep holes and vents
  • On fencing, especially tubular fencing around pools (redbacks love hiding there!)
  • BBQ areas
  • Children play equipment
  • Garden shed
  • Roof void and sub-floor (if you have one)

Spider web removal

Don’t remove spider webs before our visit, they help us identify spider hiding places. We spray webs as part of our treatment so any hidden spiders pick up insecticide from their web when they come out of hiding. To remove webs after our treatment, we recommend waiting 2 or 3 days and then brushing them down. Don’t hose them down as it will wash away the treatment and reduce its effectiveness.

The MAD ANT team were helpful, approachable, informative and friendly right from the moment I contacted them. They came to install a Termite Management system (which they did) and also did a pest spray inside. They answered all my questions about pet safety and how to keep them safe, and they did a great job with the work. The cost was also reasonable. I definitely recommend them :)

    Spider Control FAQ

The only way to get rid of spiders in the house is to carry out a spider treatment. If you have one or two spiders you can spray them directly with a quality crawling insect aerosol. However, as spiders generally live outside and find their way inside, if you have an ongoing spider problem inside the house, a comprehensive professional spider treatment to the outside of the home would generally be the best problem for long term protection.

The best way to get rid of spider webs is to use a brush. If you use water to wash them down, they will often stick to the wall and be difficult to remove. If there is still an active spider in the web it will be best to treat the spider and spider web first before brushing it down. When we carry out a professional spider treatment we recommend leaving the webs in place for 2 or 3 days before brushing them down, to ensure the spider is dead. With a professional spider treatment it leaves a fine layer of insecticide on the surface, which prevents spiders moving into the area and building new webs for many months.

How long a spider control treatment lasts depends on the type of insecticide used, the type of surface and how exposed the surface is to sun and rain. A quality professional treatment should last 6 months indoors or in shaded conditions, but may only last 3 months in outdoor areas which can be exposed to some sun and rain. Treatments exposed to full sun and rain will have the shortest period of protection.

    Types of Spiders in Brisbane

The black house spider is a mostly black spider with brown and black, mottled abdomen and legs. It has a leg span of up to 30 mm. It builds dense webs with a funnel like opening, under eaves and around windows and doors. It does have a moderately painful bite but tends to run to its hiding place when disturbed.

Female redbacks are a black spider with red stripe on the abdomen. They have a leg span of up to 40 mm. The build messy open webs, often including debris or dead leaves. The webs are built in cracks and crevices, in tubular metal fencing and inside around down lights. They have a very painful bite which includes sweating around the bite site. Seek medical attention if concerned.

There are a number of different huntsman species in Brisbane including the brown huntsman, grey huntsman and badge huntsman spiders. They come in a variety of colours and sizes, with the largest having a leg span of 100 mm or more. They don’t build webs, but female huntsman can be seen carrying or guarding web like egg sacs. They like to live under rocks and logs and under bark, which is why they like squeezing under sheets and clothes on the floor! Although they look scary and move fast, they are actually quite a timid spider and rarely bite. Their bite is considered quite mild.

The white-tailed spider has a long thin body with leg span of up to 28 mm. It has a dark body with 4 white spots on the abdomen and a fifth spot at the end (the “white tail”). It’s legs are pale brown with dark strips. It does not build webs and lives under rocks and logs (and sheets and clothing!). It has a painful bite, although the belief it causes flesh to decay is a myth.

How to prevent spiders invading your home?

Other than having a professional pest control treatment it is very difficult to stop spiders from entering your home. Certainly, well fitted insect screens on doors and window will help, but spiders are very good at squeezing under doors! Another action is to keep vegetation away from the edge of the building, as plants and mulch create a great environment for insects and spiders. Either keep vegetation well trimmed back or better still replace any plants in the ground with plants in pots placed on pebbles as mulch.

    Spider bite first aid

If you are bitten by a spider, this is the standard spider bite first aid:

    • Get the victim to sit down (and stay calm)
    • Clean the bite area with water and disinfectant
    • Apply an ice pack to the bite area if it becomes painful
    • Seek medical attention if the patient develops severe symptoms

In Brisbane the most common spider bites of concern are from redbacks and white-tailed spiders. Redback spiders are more likely to cause a more severe response in children, the elderly and the infirm, and if bitten it is recommended to seek medical attention.

For the record there is no evidence that white-tailed spider bites cause flesh to decay!

Funnel web spiders and mouse spiders are not very common in the Brisbane area. Both of these large, black ground dwelling spiders have a very painful bite which require medical attention. However, the first aid for these spiders is different to the standard spider bite first aid – you should apply snake bite first aid (immobilise the limb).

Don’t try and catch any spider. If you can see it, take a photo with your phone to show to medical staff if required.
